As a location scout in Las Vegas, Nancy Haecker has matched scripts with locales for films such as
3000 Miles to Graceland and America's Sweethearts. Currently, she's assisting
director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic and Erin Brockovich) on a remake of the Rat
Pack's Ocean's 11, with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, due out in winter.
Q:
What exactly do you do?
A:
Literally scout. If there's a scene with horses riding across a prairie and you can see for a
thousand miles, you go look for that location.
Q:
What is the most ubiquitous Vegas location?
A:
The welcome to las vegas sign at the Strip's south end.
Q:
What is quintessential Vegas?
A:
Bellagio, Caesars Palace, the Venetian, the MGM. They're what Vegas has become: great food, shows,
shopping, gambling.
Q:
Which location will Ocean's 11 make especially popular?
A:
Bellagio's fabulous Picasso dining room. It's outrageous—you're surrounded by original
Picassos.
Q:
Where is old-school Vegas?
A:
Fremont Street. You'll find nickel slots, neon signs, and cheap buffets.
Q:
What things must visitors do?
A:
See a great show like Cirque du Soleil's O, a classic like Wayne Newton, and a bad lounge act, like
the Sun Spots at Union Plaza.
Q:
What's your favorite Las Vegas film?
A:
I loved Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
