A glass pumpkin by artist Miranda Teel
Autumn begins in August at Nichols Art Glass in The Dalles, Ore. That's when glassblower Miranda Teel begins shaping her first glass pumpkins of the season. By early October she will have created 150 opaque versions of the fall veggies. The four- to nine-inch orbs ($65 to $135), in knobby, irregular shapes and mottled colors, are dead ringers for the real ones you'll find growing in nearby Hood River Valley pumpkin patches.
