Crow cradle at Buffalo Bill Historical Center

Crow Indian elders would present an ornate cradle like this one—of wood and deerskin with bead ornaments—to an expectant mother as a traditional gift. Made on a reservation around 1900, it celebrates the time when the tribe still followed the bison herds. Today, you’ll find it alongside bear-claw necklaces, shields, and a bow case studded with porcupine quills at the Plains Indian Museum, one of five museums that make up the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyo.
