With its pale marble counter and gleaming bar mirror, the soda fountain at Utah’s oldest restaurant, the Bluebird, beckons to passersby on Main Street in Logan, a half hour north of Salt Lake City. Appetites compete, as they have since the eatery opened in 1914: A chocolate shake or an ice cream sundae? What
about dinner?
In 1923, the Bluebird moved and went upscale. Still in evidence are the 20-foot ceilings hung with chandeliers, the intimate dining areas, and the ballroom. Although the white tablecloths are now gone, you can get a prime rib sandwich for $7. And even if you skip the ice cream, be sure to ask the soda jerk for an ironport, a soft drink served principally in the intermountain West that tastes like cream soda with a bite.
A son of the original owner sold the Bluebird in 1994 to An Sheng Xu and his family. "We have good, loyal customers, " Xu says. "They’ve come here for years. " Many who recall visiting as children now bring their grandkids, he says. 19 N. Main St., (435) 752-3155.
