Big Hole River, Montana:
A Place to Catch Fish

  arctic grayling fish

By Sean McCourt

Flowing free for its entire 153 miles, the Big Hole River harbors brook, brown, and rainbow trout, plus burbot, mountain whitefish, and the continent’s only native river–dwelling arctic grayling outside Alaska. Rugged anglers find float access at such sites as Browne’s Bridge, Fishtrap Creek, Maidenrock, and two other primitive campgrounds equipped with vault latrines (406-994-4042). Softies in need of cocktails, gourmet meals, and fishing guides can book a package at Craig Fellin Outfitters & Big Hole Lodge (406-832-3252).
