Gold Beach, Oregon

child holding large salmon

By Nino Padova

A place for river fun
Gold may have put this southern coast town on the map, but for a glimpse of the region’s real riches, journey up the mighty Rogue River. Board a hydro jet for a daylong excursion that moves from tranquil estuary to Class III rapids. Along the way, guides introduce you to black bears, mink, and other wildlife that inhabit this backcountry wilderness (Jerry’s Rogue Jets, 800-451-3645). Even a novice can reel in a 30-pound king salmon with help from one of the many fishing escorts in town. Guide Steve Beyerlin (Fish Oregon Guide Service, 800-348-4138) won’t just bring you to where they’re biting, he’ll also clean your catch and have it vacuum wrapped.
