1860s Concord stagecoach at High Desert Museum in Bend, Ore.

By Kristina Malsberger

Before trains took over, stagecoaches were the genteel means of travel in the West. This 15-seat 1860s Concord coach cut wheel ruts between Carson City, Nev., and Hangtown (Placerville), Calif., delivering such swells as Ulysses S. Grant and Mark Twain. It's now at the High Desert Museum in Bend, Ore. (541) 382-4754, www.highdesertmuseum.org.
