The wild Pacific Ocean lures guests to Kalaloch Lodge on the Washington's Olympic Peninsula.
The wild Pacific Ocean lures guests to Kalaloch Lodge
on the Washington's Olympic Peninsula.

By Leah Hennen

When the weather outside is frightful, it's all the more delightful at Kalaloch Lodge. Snuggle up in one of its cabins–perched on a bluff along the untamed coast of Washington's Olympic Peninsula–and watch as winter storms rage and surf churns. And if howling winds knock out the power? Flashlights are on hand and many units have wood-burning stoves. Kalaloch is largely unplugged anyway: The rooms have no TVs or phones.

If you're keen to venture out, the lodge will provide hiking maps, tide tables, and walking sticks. Don't miss Kalaloch Beach, scattered with giant driftwood; Ruby Beach, a trove of garnet-hued sand and towering sea stacks; or Beach 4, where you might spot sea lions near teeming tide pools. A bit farther afield, you'll find glacier-frosted mountains and mossy rain forests where you can hike among the spruce and hemlock trees.

Come nightfall, tuck into fresh king salmon in the lodge's restaurant before being lulled to sleep by the sounds of pounding waves and pouring rain. Winter Storm Catcher packages from $150. (866) 525-2562, visit kalaloch.com.
